THE BLESSING: NOT IN THE KNOWING, BUT IN THE DOING (Part 1)

 

The Scripture

John 13:12-15 12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.​

The Idea: Jesus and His Disciples

 We are called to do what Jesus did. Jesus washed His disciples’ feet—a job normally reserved for the lowest servant. Yet, Jesus willingly served those who followed Him. He served the one who would deny Him, and He even served the one who would betray Him for pieces of silver. Jesus knew it all beforehand, but His true example is found in the doing.

The Point: Jesus and you 

Do you understand that Jesus, by taking on the role of a servant and washing His disciples' feet, leaves us with no excuse? He washed the feet of the very man who would betray Him just hours after the Last Supper.

It doesn't matter how well we can recall the story, how many historical facts we know, or even if we can dissect the original Greek translation. If we do not follow Christ's example and show love in this same manner—the love to forgive, to surrender, and to serve in God's house—our knowledge means nothing. In the end, it’s not about how much you know; it’s about what you do with what you know. Action is what matters most—because faith without works is dead (James 2:26).
